As if there’s not enough reasons to love coconuts, coconut oil is also beneficial for weight loss. The Medium Chain Triglycerides prominent in coconut oil metabolizes differently compared to other chains of fat, giving your body extra calorie burn compared to the same amount of other fats consumed. It can also reduce your appetite by making you feel full; this is the effect of ketone bodies your liver produces when you eat coconut oil. A study also found that coconut oil can help decrease the dangerous belly fat associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels.
  Now that you know the weight loss benefits of coconut oil, don’t go overboard and add tons of coconut oil to your diet hoping it will work 3 times better because after all, coconut oil is fat. The safe and effective dosage of coconut oil is 2 tablespoons (30 ml) per day and it is advised that you gradually increase the amount from 1 tablespoon to 2 within few weeks to avoid unpleasant effects that come with high intake. For an effective weight loss effect, focus on replacing the fat you consume with coconut oil rather than adding it on top of that amount.

  • Cooking with coconut oil: Coconut oil can withstand higher heat compared to other kinds of oil, making it ideal for cooking.
  • Use it in recipes: Coconut oil can be used as a substitute for oil and butter in many recipes. Make sure the ingredients are at room temperature before mixing them together to avoid clumping. 
  • Add it to beverages: Add a teaspoon or 2 in hot beverages such as coffee or tea. It also works with smoothies and protein shakes.

Now, this is important, don’t expect coconut oil to be a miracle on its own. The above benefits comes together with a healthy diet and regular exercise. There are no shortcuts to a good health after all!
