Climate Change and Veganism

Posted by Tintin Sealey

It’s not knew information that animal agriculture is one of the single most harmful industries affecting climate change today. With new research, it has been found that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75%. This is equivalent to the entire area mass of the US, China, Europe and Australia combined, whilst still feeding the entire world.    We have four most important reasons you should be going vegan for the environment:  pexels-photo-2316089
  • Lower excessive cO2 production
In a report written by the United Nations, when emissions from land use and land use change are included, the livestock sector accounts for 9 percent of CO2 deriving from human-related activities, but produces a far larger share of even more harmful greenhouse gases.
  • Reduces water wastage
The estimated amount of water to produce a kilo of beef is around 13,000 litres to 100,000 litres. No matter which figure you choose to believe, the damage to the environment is clear, especially when you compare it to the 1,000-2,000 litres of water used to produce a kilo of wheat.
  • Reduces destruction of topsoil & tropical rainforest
30% of the earth’s landmass is used for holding farm animals. Much of this land would otherwise be hosting natural habitats such as valuable rainforests. Livestock production alone is responsible for 70% of deforestation in the Amazon region of Latin America, where rainforests are being cleared to create new pastures.
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
Worldwide food production requires 30% of the total soil available, 20% of fossil fuel energy and a major part of the freshwater flow27. Raising cattle is one of the most damaging components of agriculture28. In addition to their gaseous emissions and manure products, it causes the most environmental damage of any non-human species through over-grazing, soil erosion, desertification and tropical deforestation.   Choosing vegan alternatives to your favourite foods is one of the easiest ways to do your part in helping climate change! Cocofrio ice-cream is 100% vegan and organic, so why not give it a try?!
